I just loved this second-chance romance with a twist that had tons of heart and two characters that made me laugh, swoon, and fall in love with them despite their obvious flaws. Sarina Bowen has once again worked her magic with words and created another wonderful story that I couldn’t put down!
There were so many things to love in this book. Rickie had so many issues but was just perfect. He’s missing a whole year of his life and is struggling from the trauma that caused it, but he still manages to be funny, charming, and endearing even though there is a pain that rides just underneath the surface. Daphne has a secret of her own that has caused her pain and forced her to re-route her plans to get her degree and get out of Vermont. She’s guarded and knows what can happen when she loses focus, but somehow Rickie manages to get past her defenses, and I loved watching her inner bad girl make some appearances. These two together were exactly what each other needed, and even though it was frustrating at times waiting for Daphne to give Rickie a chance, with everything these two would go through they needed that time to build the trust and friendship that underscored their relationship.
The mystery surrounding what happened to Rickie was revealed throughout the story and it was hard not to rush through the pages to find out what really happened. There were hints along the way about certain things, but seeing how things were tied together and how the whole thing played out had a few twists and turns I did not expect.
I just loved the entire Shipley family and Grandpa Gus was definitely a scene stealer! I love books with strong family bonds, and the Shipley’s had just that. There were some issues between Daphne and her family and it was nice to see those brought to light and resolved. I also really loved Lenore, the psychologist that Rickie was working with - she added so much to this story.
Waylaid was so much more than I anticipated and I absolutely loved this book! Sarina Bowen has a way with words that make her a must read for anyone!
