Review - Foolproof Love by Katee Robert

Foolproof Love
by Katee Robert
Series: Foolproof Love, #1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: June 6, 2016

Bull rider Adam Meyer put Devil’s Falls in his rearview mirror years ago and hasn’t stopped running since. Now he’s back—temporarily, if he has any say about it. Restless, he finds himself kissing the sexiest girl in town…and agreeing to be the fake boyfriend in her little revenge scheme.

Jules Rodrigez isn’t interested in the role of town spinster. Being seen with a hell raiser like Adam is the perfect way to scandalize the residents, make her ex jealous, and prove she’s a sexy, desirable woman. And if their plan includes ridiculously hot sex—in public, of course—all the better.

But this thing between them has an expiration date. Putting down roots isn’t in Adam’s blood, and Jules’s roots in Devil’s Falls are bedrock deep. He’ll leave, even if it rips out his heart. But this time, he’s not sure he’ll survive it…

I absolutely loved this book! From the quirky heroine who wants to create a scandal to get back at her ex, to the damaged hero who doesn’t think he’ll ever be enough, there was so much to love in this book.

Jules was so much fun. What starts as an impulsive act to get back at her ex quickly turns into some serious chemistry that gives fake-dating a whole new meaning. She’s truly happy with her life, proud owner of Cups and Kittens – yep, a cafĂ© where the cats rule the place - and even if the town thinks she maybe the crazy cat lady spinster at only 26 years old, she’s not ready to believe that there’s not something and someone great waiting for her. But when her ex shows up back in town – the one who told her she was boring – and he and the whole town just expect her to want to pick up where they left off, she knows there is no way she can go down that path again. So what’s a girl to do other than find the town’s bad boy and convince him to fake-date her and cause a bit of a scandal in town…she’ll show him who’s boring!
“So as you’ve noticed, my ex is watching me really closely right now, and I might have told him a tiny white lie about me dating someone in order to avoid a devastating dose of humiliation. And since I can’t date Daniel and no one would ever believe I’d date Quinn – “

The man in question frowned. “You really know how to hit a man where it hurts, Jules.”

“- that leaves you.”

Adam’s face remained impassive. “I see.”

There wasn’t a whole lot to work with in those words, but he also had let his free hand drift down to settle on her hip, so she just kept talking. “If you could just play along and maybe kiss me like you want to do filthy things to me in the bed of your truck, I’d really appreciate it.”

And what a man she chooses…a real dirty-talking, take charge, bad boy who has scandal written all over him. Adam’s not known for sticking around for long, which is why he is perfect for Jules’s plan. He’s only back in town to check on his sick mother and knows it won’t be long before the urge to move sets in again. Jules’s fake-dating proposition may be just the distraction he needs to help keep him sane while he’s in town...and even though she’s his best friends little cousin, Adam just can’t help himself. He knows crossing the physical line with Jules is a bad idea, but even worse, the more time he spends with her, the more he really likes the person she is. And she doesn’t make it easy for him to keep his distance…
“So, about that dirty-talking lesson…”

His hand tightened almost imperceptibly. “You want that lesson now?”

“No time like the present.” It was such a bad idea, but dragging Adam into some of the trees lining the swimming hole was an even worse idea. “How do I start?” She cleared her throat. “Adam, I’d very much like you to stick your bits into my bits.”

Adam laughed, the sound deep and carrying. “Holy shit, sugar.”

“That’s not exactly the reaction I was going for.” She frowned and tried again. “I want your c-co…Dang it, I can’t say it. Why can’t I say it? It’s a freaking male chicken.”

He tilted his sunglasses down so he could shoot her a look over the top of them. “There isn’t a damn thing in common with a male chicken and my cock.”

The way he said it, as if it was just another word, inexplicably made her stomach tighten. And his hand was still on her knee. “Fine. I already said I suck at this. Teach me, Master Adam.”

“Patience, young padawan.”
From the very start you could feel there was so much more going on between Adam and Jules then just acting their parts. From Adam’s intense need to protect her from her ex, to Jules’s desire to be a person Adam can trust and confide in, these two had relationship written all over them.

The rest of the characters in the book were great and I loved the strength of the friendship between Daniel, Quinn, and Adam. They’ve dealt with tragedy together, and even though time and distance have come between them, their bond is still strong. And Jules’s best friend Aubry was so much fun! She kept things real for Jules, never afraid to let her know what she thinks and didn’t think twice when it came to calling Jules out if she needed to. And it was so much fun watching her poke at Quinn every time he tried to get close to her – I can’t wait for the next book in the series which features this pair.

I haven’t met a Katee Robert book I haven’t liked, and Foolproof Love was no exception. It was an easy read with not a lot of angst. It had the steam you would expect from a book in the Brazen line, and her dirty-talking cowboy was so much fun! I’m not always a fan of the fake romance trope, but Katee Robert has delivered a story that is so authentic it made the romance seem anything but fake. I would definitely recommend this book to any lover of romance who enjoys a bit of steam and dirty talk along the way to their HEA.

I received a copy of this book NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
