Meg and Charlie Schock return for another intriguing case. This one hiding a secret that could wreck Charlie’s life.
The newborn son of popular D.C. morning show host Carl Havers and his wife was kidnapped fifteen years ago. Charlie Schock, then an FBI agent, solved the open-and-shut case, returning Ethan to his parents. Now, the young man shows up at Schock Investigations with a DNA test proving Charlie got it wrong—he’s not the Havers’ son. His parents are still out there…so is the real Ethan Havers…and he wants to find them, no matter what.
Did she get it wrong all those years ago? Charlie won’t stop until she’s solved the case all over again, regardless of the personal cost. The mystery takes her and Meg on an investigation steeped in deception, danger, and possible redemption. Will their combined skills be enough to bring a lost boy home?
2nd Strike by Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano had everything I’ve come to love and expect from this fabulous writing duo. A seamless plot, lots of action, mystery, and suspense, wonderful characters, and just the right amount of romance to give the story an additional dimension.
I’m totally loving the Schock Sisters and love the way they play off each other and step up when they need to. Charlie is usually the one to be in control, has a no holds barred attitude, and tries to protect everyone in her circle, but in this book we see a more vulnerable and emotional side that really had me liking her even more. Meg is usually the more emotional one, but boy did I love how she stepped up her game and out of her comfort zone and did what she had to in order to protect Charlie. The Meg from the first book wasn’t lost, she was still driven by her emotions, but I loved how much her character grew in this book, finding a way to not let her emotions overwhelm her and channel them into action.
The mystery itself was very well done. There were plot-twists and subtle diversions, all which were surrounded by a great secondary cast of characters. The teenage characters were written very well and so realistically – something that you don’t often see in books. Having characters from the Justice League series pop-up always makes me smile and there were several who showed up in this book. I also love that we get to spend some time with Meg and Charlie’s parents. They are both great characters who allow Meg and Charlie to show another side of themselves.
There was a bit more romance in this book than there was in the first book. I loved learning about Meg’s private life and the budding relationship there. Charlie and JJ’s romance arc moved forward and I loved seeing these two work their way through some issues and come out stronger for it. With the challenges these two have it’s hard not to want to see them get their happy ever after.
Another great read from Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano that belongs on everyone’s TBR list!.Matt has spent the last forty-eight hours trying to avoid her. Me? I’m not so lucky. I live next door and after the lecture I got last night about proper garbage placement, I’m half-tempted to call JJ and tell him to get his fine self over there tonight and give her an orgasm. Maybe ten. Whatever it takes.
The man is a civil servant, after all.
