In the heart of the Rockies
One white Christmas can change everything.
When firefighter and single dad Steve Springfield moved his four kids to a Colorado Christmas tree ranch, he intended for it to be a safe haven. But he never expected danger to follow them to his childhood home…
Or that he would come face-to-face with the one girl he could never forget.
Folk artist Camille Brandt lives a quiet life. As the town’s resident eccentric, she’s used to being lonely—until Steve freaking Springfield changes everything. Brave and kind, he’s always had a piece of her heart, and it doesn’t take long before she’s in danger of falling for him again. But as mysterious fires break out across the sleepy Colorado town, Steve and Camille will have to fight if they want their happy family to survive until Christmas...
Another great read from Katie Ruggle that had a wonderful romance wrapped in a great mystery/suspense.
I just loved Camille. She was definitely not your typical heroine - she’s quirky, very shy, and tends to be a bit socially awkward. She’s not had an easy time of things growing up and has always found solace in her art. It was fun to see her lose her cool when she runs into “Steve freaking Springfield” as an adult – she had a big crush on him in high school and she’s not quite sure what to do with that awareness now that he’s back in town, and she really finds herself quite a bit out of her comfort zone every time she’s around him. But boy did I love seeing her find her way as their friendship begins and then blossoms into a romance, all while she has a chance to get to know his kids and build relationships with them as well.
Steve “freaking” Springfield was just such a wonderful hero. I loved the bit parts that he played in the authors “Rocky Mountain K9 Unit” and was so happy he was going to get a chance to find his own HEA – even if that meant returning home to give his family the safety and security they needed to thrive. He was so great with his kids – being a single dad he didn’t always have it easy when dealing with his kids, but he always seemed to find a way to give all his kids just what they needed.Except for when she was in her workshop, everything else in life seemed so hard and uncomfortable, like a pair of shoes that didn’t really fit. With Steve and his kids, though, she felt as if she clicked effortlessly into place, as if they’d made a spot in their family just for her.
I really enjoyed the family aspect of the book and loved having Christmas woven into the story line. From getting to see the family’s Christmas tree ranch in action to Camille’s featuring her work in the gift shop, there was such a cozy holiday theme throughout the book. The Springfield family is close and I really just loved all of Steve’s kids.
Although I loved how the danger and mystery in the book brought Camille and Steve together, and there was definitely the level of action and suspense I expect from a Katie Ruggle book, my only complaint would be was that I wasn’t entirely thrilled with the ending. I think things tied up a bit too quickly and without enough detail, but I’m hoping that the rest of the series will help fill in some of the blanks for me.
Katie Ruggle has quickly become one of my go-to authors when I need an action packed romantic suspense read and I really love the start to this new series. I’d definitely recommend this book to any romance or mystery reader.
I received an advance reader copy from the publisher via NetGalley which I voluntarily reviewed.
