Even as he fights for their future…

With the world still rebuilding after massive dragon attacks, famous singer Star isn’t willing to rely on a stranger to protect her family—though dragon shifter Lachlan is difficult to resist. Something about him is strangely familiar, but she doesn’t understand why. He’s already helped Star rescue her sister from a recent abduction, but trust doesn’t come easy when his kind has nearly hunted her race to extinction. When her sister’s kidnapper launches another violent attack, Star has no choice but to accept Lachlan’s aid. But no matter that he’s stepped up to protect her, she’ll never allow the ancient Scottish dragon into her heart.

They’re bound by the past.

Lachlan lost the woman he was meant to mate millennia ago. Unable to live in a world without her, his pain drove him to hibernation. He never thought he would move on—until Star. He’s well aware the feisty shifter is his new destiny, so if tailing her to New Orleans is what he has to do to be near her, then so be it. When Star is attacked, Lachlan resolves to protect her at all costs. And he won’t have to do it alone. It will take Lachlan, his clansmen, and Star’s misfit band of friends to rain fiery vengeance down upon their enemy if she and her sister are to ever be truly free. Only then can he claim her and discover the shocking truth that lies buried in their past.

What a wonderful world Katie Reus has built! We get a look at what this new world looks like now that the paranormal community has been outed and I can’t wait to read more in this series!

Star and Lachlan were a wonderful match. They are both alpha, but complement each other so well. Lachlan is a very old dragon shifter who has just woken from a very long sleep. Just one sound of Star’s voice and he knows she is his. Star is a shifter but keeps just what she is hidden for safety reasons. When Lachlan comes to claim the date he won at auction (pre-new world order), Star doesn’t quite know what to do with him. He’s pushy and over-bearing, but he gives her the room she needs to take the lead and make her own decisions. These two were great together and I loved how they played off of one another without losing who they were as Star slowly let Lachlan in and learned to trust him.
“Thank you for saving me.” His words came out rough. They hadn’t known each other long - even if it felt as if he’d known her for a lifetime - and she’d risked her safety to protect him when he’d been vulnerable. It was a debt he wouldn’t soon forget.

“You would have done the same for me.” There was a note of conviction in her voice.

“Aye, true. I vaguely remember telling you to run, to leave me.” He didn’t think he’d imagined that.

“Then it’s a good thing I don’t take orders from you.”

He chuckled softly. “No, you dinnea. And I have a feeling you never will, lass.”

“Do you really want a female who you can order about?”

The fact that she was even asking meant she was considering something between them. Or at least it sounded like it. “I don’t. Except maybe in the bedroom.”
The whole cast of characters was wonderful. I love how diverse the groups were and how many different types of characters were introduced. I loved how Star’s group came together to form their own family even though they were so diverse. The various clans and packs introduced look to provide a lot of different characters for future books. With the rebuilding happening, I loved the politics at play as different groups have to work together even though there is a history of mistrust between so many of them. I especially loved King, the alpha of New Orleans, and can’t wait to see where his story will take us.

This book is a spin-off of another series but can easily be read as a standalone (I have not read the other series and had no problem diving right into this one!). There were a lot of moving parts to this book since it is the first in the series and needs to set up the world that Katie Reus is creating, but I never felt lost of in need of more information. As with many paranormal romances, the romance goes from zero to off the charts since we are dealing with fated-mates, and Katie Reus does a great job weaving the romance in to the larger story she is telling.

This one should hit the mark for anyone who loves paranormal and fantasy, or just wants an exciting action-packed read!

I received an advance reader copy from the author which I voluntarily reviewed.

Katie Reus is the New York TimesUSA Today, and IndieReader bestselling author of the Red Stone Security series, the Moon Shifter series and the Deadly Ops series. She fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom’s stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it.

However, she didn’t always know she wanted to be a writer. After changing majors many times, she finally graduated summa cum laude with a degree in psychology. Not long after that she discovered a new love. Writing. She now spends her days writing dark paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense. Her book Avenger’s Heat recently won the Georgia RWA Maggie Award for Excellence in the fantasy/paranormal category.
