Review - His Lover To Protect by Katee Robert

His Lover To Protect
by Katee Robert
Series: Out of Uniform, #3
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: September 7, 2015

He's never met a challenge he couldn't take...

Alexis Yeung did everything right....only to watch everything go horribly, horribly wrong. Broken and angry, Alexis high-tails it to Europe, determined to face the world on her own terms and without consequence. Which includes a mind-blowing night with a sexy, scarred stranger.

Except, embittered former pararescuer Luke Jackson isn't exactly a stranger. He's supposed to keep an eye on Alexis without her knowing. Ending up in bed together was definitely not the plan. Now he's chasing her (admittedly hot) ass across Europe, a game of cat and mouse that always ends with the two of them tangled up in the sheets.

Something in their scarred, damaged souls calls to each other. And God help them, the sex in unbelievably hot. But if Alexis discovers who Luke really is, he'll lose the one thing that makes him feel whole...

This was a sexy, fast paced read that had two damaged people coming together and offering the other what they needed to begin to heal. We got to learn about Alexis in the previous book in this series and I was looking forward to her story – once again Katee Roberts did not disappoint!

Alexis has had so many things in her life go wrong. She’s trying to pick up the pieces of her life, but every time she turns around something else happens to set her back. She just needs to get away and prove to herself she can take care of herself so she can begin to rebuild her life. Knowing how fragile she was on the inside, it was wonderful watching her make decisions for herself and stop living for everyone else’s expectations. Although she was overcompensating and definitely out of her comfort zone, when she meets Luke and begins to let him in, even if it starts off only as a physical thing, I couldn’t help but smile. Although her taking off to Europe seemed to be a bit extreme, as the story unfolds and we learn some of the back-history of her life and the significance of her journey I was totally on board with her decision.

Although Luke has been sent by Alexis’s family to watch over her, he finds himself drawn to her…which he knows is not going to make her family happy. He’s been injured and carries those scars both physically and emotionally, and he’s still angry and frustrated which makes him a bit prickly to be around. After their first encounter, which ends up with them in bed, he finds himself in a bit of a predicament – how to keep an eye on Alexis as she travels all over Europe without her thinking he’s stalking her.

It was so much fun to watch Luke and Alexis together. There was such tension between them right from the start and watching their defenses kick in made for some fun dialogue and scenes between them. As Luke and Alexis slowly begin to trust each other you can feel the healing in each of them begin and also sense the bond between them begin to develop and strengthen. There was no shortage of sparks and steam between these two which was hot, but the physical side of their relationship only served to strengthen their emotional bond – even if they both refused to acknowledge it! Of course Luke’s secret is always looming in the background and you could tell it was only a matter of time before things would once again go wrong for Alexis when she found out the real reason Luke came in to her life…and maybe set her back once again.

Although the pace of this book moves quickly, the story was not rushed and I didn’t feel that the relationship development skipped any steps. The characters had a real emotional depth that came off the page – the hurt, the pain, the healing…it was easy to feel right along with the characters and then root for them to find their happy ever after.

Katee Roberts delivers another great addition to the Out of Uniform series. This can be read as a stand-alone since she does a nice job giving enough back story where Alexis is concerned. The focus really is on Alexis and Luke and any secondary characters play a very minor role.

This is another must read from Katee Roberts that has a great story filled with emotion, great characters, some great tension, and a dirty talking hero that sets off lot of sparks and steam!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
