Douglass McGrail is a Scottish water horse—his clan the deadliest in the British Isle. When the shifter chooses to save—rather than eat—a young lassie, he never expects her innocent face to mark his memory so strongly.

Months later, he stumbles onto a perceived attack in progress and plays the hero once more. He’s shocked to find the victim is the same lass who haunts his dreams.

Jinny Fairchild is an English miss who’s come to the Highlands to live with her last remaining family. She is pursued by her handsome older cousin, Lachlan Brockhouse, but he has a dark side that lands her in the path of the mighty Douglass McGrail.

Douglass wants Jinny for himself, yet discovers she is connected to the attacker she denies knowing. He’s determined to find the truth.

Jinny loves Lachlan, even with his dark side. And she loves Douglass, even with his dark secret. Her heart is torn, but one thing is certain—no matter which of these men she chooses, she will be choosing a monster.

An interesting read that was unique and entertaining. You don’t come across many books that feature water horses, and having the story set in the historical Scottish Highlands gave this novella the perfect setting. The story had a bit of a dark undertone to it, but it fit the characters and helped tell the story.

There wasn’t a whole lot of character development, mostly because this was a novella, but the author did a nice job filling in the blanks and giving history where needed to understand the emotional and psychological makeup of the characters. Enough information was always provided at the right time to get a better understanding of why a character behaved a certain way or why circumstances played out the way they did. My only complaint is that I would have loved to have known more about the Clan McGrail and the water horse history…but again, for a novella there was enough information to tell the story, I was just left wanting to know more!

Jinny was a bit naïve. Her initial welcoming of Lachlan’s advances were a bit surprising, but after spending her life growing up on her dad’s ship I thought she might have been a bit more of a fighter. Granted, she is young, but being around sailors all day for so many years I would have loved to see her do a little better job of standing up for herself. I did love the fact that she never asked Douglas to deny his heritage – that scored big points in my book!

Douglas was wonderful. Although he has a dark nature that’s part of his being a water horse, he is totally smitten with Jinny. I loved the fact that he was always true to his nature, but where Jinny was concerned his need to protect overrode those instincts. Lachlan on the other hand was pure evil in my book, and deserved so much more than he got!

All in all, I really enjoyed this one. It was a bit dark and edgy, but I was swept into the time period and loved the water horse lore!
