After the death of her father, her brother Nico thought it would be good for her to come to America and start over. At her welcome to America party, she meets Brian, who she thinks is safe. Spending time together, it doesn’t take long for those feelings to grow, but she’s got a secret, one that keeps her from thinking she’s ever going to find happiness.
Brian Burns had a rough start in life…
Orphaned at age six, he grew up in the system until he turned eleven and met the people who would become his parents. Now an adult, Brian wants to help other vulnerable children, so he’s devoted his life to being a social worker and helping them find their temporary or permanent homes.
The moment he laid eyes on Mila, he knew there was something there, but she pulled the friend card with him. He bided his time, but whenever they seem to get closer, something would hold her back.
Can Mila open her heart enough to share a painful secret with him?
Or will they both walk away damaged and heartbroken?
“The Heartbreaker series is one of my favorites out there. Each book is sweet, sexy, passionate, romantic, intense, and gives each couple a fresh start and second chance at love. And Mila... well this became my new top favorite. #TeamBrian” ~Brianna at Renee Entress’s Blog
“THIS IS SUCH A HEARTWARMING STORY!!! Love At First Site!! Filled with Sighs and Cries!!” ~Reviews From The Heart
I really enjoyed Mila and Brian’s story. The characters were real and even though there were some issues to overcome, the drama and angst was kept to a level that I thought was realistic and could be expected given the circumstances.
Mila has many issues from her past that keep her from ever getting into a serious relationships. After the issues with her father and some other things that have happened, it’s easy to see why she is afraid of love and getting hurt. I loved that when she met Brian she recognized right away that he wasn’t the normal guy she would usually get involved with – someone she could walk all over and then walk away from. And even though she fought real hard, she knew she couldn’t deny that there was something special between them.
Brian was just a really nice guy and was far from being boring like some nice guys can be. He’s had some tragedy in his past, but has ultimately been brought up in a very loving home which has taught him values and respect. He too often gets “friend-zoned”, and when he meets Mila he is so frustrated because he knows that there is something real to be explored. I loved watching him take his time and let Mila come to see that he can accept all of her – including all the scars she is carrying.
Mila and Brian together weren’t an explosive couple, but you could feel the chemistry and rightness between them. From the first time they get together you can tell that they are meant for one another. And even though both Mila and Brian had a few moments where they were a bit thick-headed, I liked the fact that they always came back to each other and talked things through – even though there was no guarantee that things could be resolved.
I always love series where we get to catch up with characters from the previous books, and I love how Gabe & Jasmine and Nico & Jill were woven into the story, giving us glimpses of what is happening in their life. I loved that the closeness of Mila and her family was evident – from her reaching out to her brother when she needed support to even just the telephone calls to her mother back in Italy, the closeness you felt from Nico’s book was still there.
This was a great read that had me cheering for Mila and Brian to find their happy ever after from the first page. There was just something about these characters and how the story was written that made you feel how perfect these two were for each other. I would definitely recommend this book to any romance reader.
