Katee Robert's Top 5 Movie/TV Mobsters List
Nikolai from Eastern Promises—I have watched this movie entirely too many times. I love Nikolai for so many freaking reasons, and that bathhouse naked fight might be one of them.
Frank Costello from The Departed—I think we can all agree that Frank is a bad, bad man, but one of my favorite scenes in that movie is him sitting down at that diner and checking on his people. He might be more monster than man, but that scene built into the fabric and foundation that ended up being the O’Malleys.
Tom Stall (formerly Joey) from A History of Violence—What can I say? I have something of a Viggo obsession. A man trying to escape his past, but still so very, very good at what he does… Oh yeah, it pushes all my buttons.
Bill “The Butcher” Cutting from Gangs of New York—I’m not even sorry that I love him so much. He was just so BAD.
Keyser Söze from The Usual Suspects –This movie blew my mind the first time I saw it. He’s so damn devious and crazy smart and manipulative and it makes my heart happy.
Some lines should never be crossed . . . not even for love.
Sloan O'Malley just left her entire world behind-her family, her wealth, and even her real name. For the first time in her life, she's free. She can live the "normal" life she's always wanted. A life without fear. But there's nothing safe about her intensely sexy next-door neighbor.
Jude MacNamara has no room for innocence in his life. Only revenge. Still, he's never been able to walk away from the forbidden, and Sloan-who is every inch of pure, mouthwatering temptation-has forbidden written all over her. Only after it's way too late does he discover the real danger: claiming Sloan as his puts a target on her back. To protect her, Jude is willing risk everything . . . and to hell with the consequences.
Another great read in the O’Malley series! Katee Robert has once again crafted a tale that has the edge and grit of a mob story but also delivers a passionate and intense romance between two people who have no business or intention of falling in love, especially with each other.
Both Sloan and Jude were great leading characters. Sloan is trying to create a new life for herself and discover who she is as a person outside the realm of the O’Malley family. Jude has spent his entire life seeking revenge and, after meeting Sloan, he too is trying to come to terms with who he is and how he might not quite be the man defined by the revenge he has spent his life seeking. I loved watching Jude and Sloan grow and struggle with who they were, who they are, and who they want to be. There was no removing the influence of their mob families from these characters, but watching them carve out an existence within the realm of their family ties was so well written it was easy to look past the bad and root for their happy ever after.“It’s the truth.” He brushed his lips against hers. “I wasn’t shitting you when I started calling you sunshine. You’re my sunshine, and my world is fucking bleak without you…”
And of course, no good mob story would be complete without all the interactions within and between all the mob families. This ongoing story line was nicely woven into Jude and Sloan’s story and helped move the overall series arc forward without seeming forced. There are so many plots and sub-plots happening that overlap and are inter-related and the author does a nice job keeping the reader informed of any necessary back-story when needed as well as setting up some things for future books.
Although this can be read as a stand-alone, there are definitely ties to the previous books in the series so it would probably be best enjoyed by starting the series at the beginning, but, as I mentioned, the author does do a really good job filling in the necessary back-story, so starting here will still make this a great read.
As usual, Katee Robert has created a delicious, dirty-talking alpha hero (although I’m finding it hard to call a hitman a hero!) who also has a lot of heart and a heroine who has an inner-strength that resonates and grows with the story. This is a very fast-paced read with lots going on, but the story is put together seamlessly and keeps you moving right with it.
This is definitely a must read for anyone who likes their romance with a bit of edge – and it will most definitely have you wanting to turn the pages to see what happens next while admonishing yourself for not taking your time to savor the story!

Katee Robert is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who learned to tell stories at her grandpa's knee. Her novel The Marriage Contract was a RITA finalist, and RT Book Reviews named it "a compulsively readable book with just the right amount of suspense and tension." When not writing sexy contemporary and romantic suspense, she spends her time playing imaginary games with her children, driving her husband batty with what-if questions, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
