Under his protection and in his bed…

For Fallon Wayland, birthdays are just another reminder of her looming spinsterhood. This year is shaping up to be no different. Unfairly fired from her job, dumped by her boyfriend, and oh yes, witnessing the murder of a high-ranking lieutenant in the local crime family… Yeah, birthdays suck.

Ever since a disastrous, hot-as-hell kiss years ago, soldier-turned-security specialist Shane Roarke has avoided his baby sister’s reckless—and gorgeous—best friend. Yet when her life is threatened after she witnesses a gang hit, he insists on protecting her…even if she objects.

The two are forced to hole up in a safe house. Alone. Passion long denied erupts between them, burning away their inhibitions. But even as layers—and clothes—are peeled away, danger closes in. Shane and Fallon might finally have a chance at love…if they survive long enough to see it.

This book had everything I love in a romantic suspense – lots of action, a great plot with twists and turns that kept me guessing, a hot, alpha hero who protects what’s his (even if it takes a while for him to admit to and act on it!), and a sassy and smart heroine who is independent, but knows when to take the help offered – especially when it comes to keeping herself alive! Throw in the fact that we are dealing with the little sister’s best friend (and yes, there is a little bit of history between the two), add in some humor, some dirty talk, and a bit of snark, and I’m all in!

Although Shane and Fallon’s love story was a bit frustrating in the beginning, knowing what was keeping Shane from giving in to his attraction to Fallon made his actions understandable. There was tons of chemistry between the two, and watching them learn about each other and themselves as the story progressed added additional depth to their relationship. Fallon is young, which also added some angst to the story, but it was fun watching these two together.

I just loved Fallon’s sense of humor and her snark. She had such a great attitude, despite some of the craptastic birthdays she’s had and bad luck in her love life, and boy could she make me laugh.
“On the last one, my boyfriend broke up with me by Twitter, and I witnessed a murder. You tell me, where do I go from there?”

“Twitter?” he croaked, zeroing in on that particular humiliating detail. “You’re fucking kidding me.”

“Asshole didn’t even have the decency to direct message me. He tweeted it to God and country.”

“And you did…what?”

She shrugged, attempting nonchalance. “Tweeted back he shouldn’t worry about his small dick or little performance problem.” She paused. “And included a picture of his junk.”

“Oh. Shit.” He stared at her, blinked several times, then threw his head back and hooted, shaking with hilarity. “You emasculated a man with social media.”

“In one hundred and forty characters. I rock.”
Shane was all alpha rolled into one sexy package, wrapped up in that protective streak that just makes you want to get all swoony. Knowing he’s suffered some trauma from his tour overseas and has had less than a perfect childhood made his behavior towards Fallon understandable – still wanted to smack him, but I got it. All I know is that if my life was in danger, I wouldn’t mind being under Shane’s protection!

I really enjoyed just about everything about this book. The plot was fast-paced, the characters were well developed, and there was a great balance between the romance and suspense. You could feel the history between Shane and Fallon, and their chemistry was off the charts. It was great getting to know some of the other characters who will be featured in this new series, and I also loved getting to “visit” with characters from Naima’s Secrets and Sins series. The ending for me was a little a bit out of character for the hero, but the setting and everything else about it was just perfect.

This was a really great read that hit all my romantic suspense buttons and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
